Frequently Asked Questions

HOW MANY TIMES WILL MY KIT PRODUCE MUSHROOMS?

Depending on species you may get 2-4 flushes. But we guarantee at least one flush of mushrooms.

There are many factors which determine the amount of flushes. Mushrooms are a living organism and it is quite a skill to cultivate them. Humidity, fresh air and temperature are the pillars of mushroom cultivation.

WHAT IS A "FLUSH"?

Besides a hand of playing cards of the same suit. A "flush" in mushroom cultivation is each crop or harvest of mushrooms. Depending on species, they usually appear once every 7-14 days.

HOW MANY MUSHROOMS WILL IT GROW?

Most mushroom kits are token size, ours weigh between 2.2 and 2.6kg. They are what the mushroom industry calls "fruiting blocks".

That said, depending on species, first flushes usually yield 400g-1kg.

Each subsequent flush is usually smaller.

WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR KIT ONCE ITS EXPENDED?

Remove your block from the plastic packaging and

Bury your block in the garden and cover with mulch or soil - this will encourage them to flush again!

OR

Break it up and use as mulch

WHY DID MY MUSHROOMS STOP GROWING?

When there isn't enough humidity around the block, mushroom pins usually stop growing. Don't be alarmed! Your mushroom kit is still alive and can fruit. Simply remove the dried-up pins (mushrooms) and leave the block to rest for a week. After that, soak the block in cold water for 20 minutes, remove all the water from the bag, and begin again.

Please Note: These yield numbers are estimates and actual results can differ, as they're based on the concept of Biological Efficiency.

Lion's Mane Mushroom Grow Kit - Your Ticket to Gourmet Mushrooms at Home

Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceus) is a mushroom not only sought out for its delicious flavor, but also for its unique medicinal properties that improve digestive health and cognitive function. It is commonly known as “the smart mushroom” and said to improve memory, mental clarity, and mood. Now you can grow your very own TRUE Lion’s Mane Mushroom!

We emphasize TRUE, because not all Australian products are made from the real thing. In fact, due to historic regulations many are made from a close relative known as the “Coral Tooth Mushroom” (Hericium corraloides) which is also called the “Australian Lion’s Mane”. This is what most Australian growers are producing and selling as Lion’s Mane.

While both of these mushrooms are in the same genus Hericium, they are different species and only distantly related. For example, within the mushroom genus Amanita you have choice edible species and also deadly poisonous ones! While both types of Hericium share a lot in common, only the health benefits of the true Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus) have scientific support. For this reason, we offer you the true and scientifically studied Lion's Mane Mushroom in our grow kits.

Enjoy the Health Benefits and Unique Flavor of Lion's Mane Mushrooms

Scientific research indicates that there are numerous potential benefits of Lion's Mane mushroom. This unique mushroom may help elevate mood, boost cognitive function, and fortify the immune system.

Although Lion's Mane is not a miracle cure by itself, incorporating it into your diet can serve as a valuable addition to healthy lifestyle habits.

When is Lion's Mane ready to Harvest?

If you're using our Lion's Mane grow kit, you'll find that the Lion's Mane mushrooms (Hericium erinaceus) are typically ready to harvest when the fruiting bodies have reached full maturity. This usually occurs around 7-14 days after the initial pinning stage.

The ideal time to harvest, especially when using our Lion's Mane grow kit, is when the mushroom's spines or "teeth" are fully developed but still soft and moist.

As a general rule, it's best to harvest Lion's Mane before the spines begin to dry out or turn brown, as this indicates that the mushroom is past its prime.

A Comprehensive Guide to Growing Lion's Mane Mushrooms Indoors

Lion's Mane Mushroom ready for harvest

Grow Lion's Mane Mushrooms At Home

With our specially prepared mushroom grow kits you can now grow these mushrooms at home. It's easy and with guaranteed results, even for those with no experience!

It only takes a little space, a bit of care, and you will reap the rewards. Watching them grow is half the fun!

Perfect for Mild Temperatures

Matures within 7-14 days and needs light misting to yield three to four flushes over a two-month period. Optimal temperatures range from 18°C to 24°C.

Lion's Mane Growth

After a while, you will notice small, dense clusters of mycelium forming at the cut. This is when the excitement begins! Over the course of 7-14 days, these tiny clusters will gradually expand, ultimately developing into full-sized Lion's Mane mushrooms.

Lion's Mane Mushroom ready for harvest

How Do I Grow It?

  • Step 1
  • Step 2
  • Step 3

Place your block on its side and where the block presses against the plastic, take a sharp clean knife and make a 10-12cm cut along this part of the bag (you could cut an “x” shape or a simple line).

Place your sliced bag in a humid part of your home (near the kitchen sink or bathroom). Make sure it is kept away from direct sunlight, and keep it well hydrated. Do this by spraying the outside of your block, over the sliced area, with water at least once per day but preferably 2-3 times.

The mushrooms can take 2-6 weeks to fruit, but will usually appear within 5-7 days. Once they appear, keep watch, they grow very fast and will be ready to harvest in 7-21 days. Harvest them all at once by gently grasping the mushrooms at the base, twist and pull.

OK have been looking to Lion's Mane after reading about it's results with facial nerve regeneration after Ramsay Hunt Syndrome and so far so good, taste wise at least !! Had tried a different way to cook previously but today whipped it up with Tempura batter and it's beautiful !! Now to try for the 2nd flush & see how that one goes !! Very satisfied with That Mushroom Guy's sales & service !! Thanks

Disappointing Result

Unfortunately I didn't get a good result from the lion's mane kit I brought. Less than 1/2 full yield on first flush. Using the exact same grow conditions/location as my other lion's mane kits from other suppliers, I always got full yield 1st flush and a good 3/4 yield 2nd flush. Quite disappointing. Maybe I got a bad batch?

Thank you for your feedback! I reviewed all the photos you uploaded and, based on these, I believe it’s not fair to compare our mushroom kits in this way, especially as some of the instructions weren’t followed. From the images, I noticed that the kits were not removed from their boxes, which severely limited airflow. This restricted ventilation is evident in the matted appearance on top of the Lion’s Mane, indicating insufficient air exchange and excess moisture buildup.

Comparing Lion’s Mane to oyster mushrooms is also an unfair comparison, particularly as the oyster mushrooms you’re referencing appear to have been grown using an entirely different method. While both require good fresh air exchange, Lion's Mane is especially sensitive to airflow management, which directly impacts its appearance.

Regarding yield, could you clarify what you meant by “less than full half yield on the first flush and then 3/4 on the second flush”? If you’re saying the first flush produced 50% of the average yield (around 540g) and the second flush yielded 75% (810g), then your total yield would be approximately 1,340g—260g more than the yield estimates provided on the product page, despite not following the instructions.

If you had reached out sooner, I could have offered some guidance to help achieve optimal results. However, since you’ve replied in the review section, I think it’s only fair for me to address the issues related to improper use and comparison of the kits for any potential customers that may read your review.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me on 0428 123 305, my name is Brett and I am always happy to help :)

Best experience - first time grower

The instructions are simple and actually work! The pink oysters were quickest to grow. They are beautiful but second flush less tough. Without looking after them a third flush is already growing. The Lions Mane is a slower grower but I personally prefer this mushroom. Texture and taste is subtle yet very interesting. The second flush is also growing with no attention from me. I will DEFINITELY be buying more mushrooms from the Mushroom Guy. My only other feedback is a cross cut is better to manage than a x cut into the bag. Go forth and grow folks. You can’t go wrong!!

Thanks so much for the feedback! Thrilled you enjoyed the experience and harvests.
